Performance Excellence Movement (PEM)

The Performance Excellence Movement (PEM) is Now Accepting Submissions!

PEM is an annual newsletter designed to enhance student, practitioner, and public awareness of the application of sport psychology techniques in sport and beyond. Articles will be written to an audience interested in the applications of sport psychology consulting. This year we are encouraging students to focus their articles in three areas of application: health, fitness, and weight management; team dynamics; and diversity.

If willing and interested, please submit an article abstract (300-400 words) by March 31, 2012 to David Bauman (dbauman@forest.edu) with your article abstract as an attachment. The single spaced, one page abstract should include:

  • Your name and school
  • A concise summary of your key points
  • References that will be used

The actual articles should follow the American Psychological Association Publication Manual, 6thEdition and should be between 6-8 pages in length (doubled spaced), including citations.

Mission Statement

The Performance Excellence Movement (PEM) is designed to increase student, practitioner, and public awareness of the application of sport and exercise psychology skills. PEM also serves to increase awareness, knowledge, and skill sets in relation to how sport and exercise psychology expertise can be effectively applied in a number of domains. The hope of PEM is to provide readers with interesting information about how some of our colleagues successfully apply their sport and exercise psychology techniques in their field and in other areas.

Objectives

The objectives of PEM are as follows:

  • Yearly publication of a PEM newsletter dedicated to exploring the use of performance enhancement skills in unique settings.
  • Increased AASP student member involvement in student initiatives through submission of articles for each PEM newsletter.
  • Recognition of AASP student and professional members’ contributions to the sport and exercise psychology field through member profiles in each newsletter.
  • Inclusion of evidence-based practice or peer-reviewed research wherever possible.
  • Distribution of the PEM newsletter to a broad audience, including AASP students and regional representatives, the AASP website, and appropriate non-AASP forums.

History of PEM

The PEM was originally established in 2001 by Robert Fazio and Michelle Coleman with the goal of increasing “awareness, knowledge, and skill set in relation to how sport and exercise psychology expertise can be effectively applied in a number of domains.” The newsletter was originally known as the PEP (Performance Excellence Program) and was a joint venture with APA Division 47. After a hiatus between 2003 and 2005, the PEM completed its most recent issue in 2009.
